Conflict
For The Conflict in A Long Way Gone, The protagonist in the story is Ishmael and is central to understanding the horror of war in Sierra Leone, because he became a boy soilder during the war. The Antagonist at first arethe rebels, they brough horror and death to the people of the villiages. Later on in the story the antagonist becomes Ishmael himself when he cannot forgive himself from being a bloodthirsty soilder to a child one more. The Climax occurs when Ashmael realizes he will never escape the war within him until he leaves Sierra Leione, He finds a way to get to Guinea and then to New York City to find his ways on becoming a new person. After a long journey from being a regular kid, to being captured and turned into a child soidler, Ishmael finds his way out of Sierra Leone, He went to Guinea, then went to New York From There. Became a high school graduate,graduated from college and then became a advocate at the UN for joining organizations to find a soloution for children how are forced to become Child Soilders.
Theme
The First and major theme in the book A Long Way Gone is "War Is Hell", the reason why I say this is because in the horror and tragedy that Ishmael relates to the reader are almost unbeilevable. The crimes commited again innocent village people give a new meaning to the idea of war. The second theme is "There Is Always Hope", the reason because after all the terrible things Ishmael has gone through he still found a way to overcome all and find his way out by finding the true meaning of love and existence again. Also after joining the UN to help and save other children to hope they will not be forced into the future tradegy that Ishmael had to go through. The Third and last theme is "When Everything Else Is Gone, There Is Always Love". The reason i say that is because after the war,and after he loses everything he still finds out that there is still love, he just found out the hard way. A few examples of this is that his Family unit with the soilders carried into the love and freindship between him and Alhaji. The next example of love is when Uncle Tommy and his family are willing to make Ishmael a son and a brother to them. The last Example of love is when people like Esther and Laura, who accepted him and welcomed him into there homes when he needed help and love the most
Character
The main character in the story A Long Way Gone by far is Ishmael Beah, who is a wonderful young man who becomes a victim of a civil war is Sierra Leone, like alot of other civilians, he was a victim of terror on the part of both sides of the war, Millionsof people died in this conflict and in that way, Ishmael is considered lucky, because he lives. However he comes out of being a child coilder and is badly damaged mentaly and physicly. He lost his family from becoming a rebel just nefore he had the chance to re-unite with them. He sees freinds and his soilder comrades die in the most horrible deaths right infront of his eyes. he lives in horrible conditions day in and day out. In most of the story, he sees little hope that his existence will ever change. Fortunatly for Ishmael he was taken away to rehabilitaion center by UNICEF who now works with him to find the child he once was before becoming the violent child soilder.
A secondary charater in the book is Esther, she is the young nurse who works at a Benin House where ishmael enters rehabilitation. She sees something worth saving for all boys who go there. But she sees something alot more in Ishmael. She works on him to become his freind and help him find trust in someone again. She recognizes that saving him may be through his rap music which is a hobby Ishmael is intrested in.
Alhaji was Ishmaels freind, who became family as they served as child soilders and suffered a horrible experience of the Civil War.
Uncle Tommy was one of the main secondary charaters in the story, Although Ishmael never met his father's brother, Uncle Tommy never hesistates when Ishmael needs a home. Him and his family offer more to Ishmael then just a home, they offer emotional support that affetcs Ishmael majorly.
